The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
